Mathematics Department

Students will follow the Edexcel Specification 1380 Linear syllabus during Years 10 and 11, leading towards a GCSE grade at the end of the course. Pupils are entered for one of two tiers: Foundation with grades G, F, E, D & C Higher with grades D, C, B, A, & A*

What will lessons be like?

The lessons will be similar to those in Year 9. They will be a mixture of forma l , practical and investigational work covering the areas:

- Number
- Algebra
- Shape and Space
- Data Handling

Within lessons, elements of functional mathematics have been embedded into the scheme of work. This introduction ensures that students have the skills they need to use in mathematics in real life contexts.

Assessment:
The GCSE course is administrated by Edexcel.

Students will take two exam papers at the end of the course. The first paper is a non-calculator exam; the second requires the use of a scientific calculator.

Sets who make sufficient progress will be entered for their GCSE in June of Year 10 or November of Year 11.

Where can it lead?

Almost all jobs and careers require you to have GCSE Mathematics. If the GCSE grade is at least a ‘B’ the Mathematics department offers a variety of courses at ‘A’ and ‘AS’ levels in Mathematics and Further Mathematics. These combine Pure Mathematics (Core), Decision Mathematics, Mechanics or Statistics. An increasing number of jobs, college courses and university courses require a high pass grade for Mathematics at GCSE.
