Food Technology Department

 

Food Technology is about how to plan, prepare, cook and serve food for a variety of different occasions. This course develops essential life skills so that students are able to plan and cook their own food. It can also be a valuable first step to a career in catering or hospitality.

 

Main Areas of Study

 

The main areas which will be studied are:


- Food preparation, cooking and presentation
- Nutrition and menu planning
- Health, safety and hygiene
- Costing and portion control
- Use of specialist equipment
- Types of establishments that provide food and drink
- Job roles, employment opportunities and training
- Communication and record keeping
- Environmental considerations

 

Where can it lead?
The skills that you learn will be relevant and useful for you in everyday life. There are also a number of courses which can be studied after GCSE level. These courses include AS Food Technology as well as the BTEC in Hospitality. Catering also gives students an understanding of nutrition which is beneficial for BTEC Health and Social Care. These are some of the occupations that are possible with a Catering qualification:
