Students in Years 10 and 11 follow AQA English Language. At the end of Year 11, a GCSE grade will be awarded. A Level will also be awarded on successful completion of the Functional Skills examination. In English Language, pupils are entered at one of two levels: Foundation or Higher

 

What will lessons be like?

Lessons will include the following:

• Reading responses to non-fiction/media texts
• Reading of extended works of fiction
• Creative Writing
• Written response to a study of spoken language
• Speaking, Listening & Role playing
• Writing for different audiences
• Understanding how skills, learnt in English, can be used in real-life situations

Where can it lead?

English Language GCSE is a requirement for many Further and Higher Education courses and provides entry into such careers as law, journalism, theatre, the media and teaching. ‘AS’ and ‘A2’ Level courses in English Language and English Literature are available in Years 12 and 13.

English Literature

Students in Years 10 and 11 follow the AQA English Literature Specification. At the end of Year 11, a GCSE grade will be awarded. Pupils are entered at one of two levels: Foundation or Higher.

 

What will lessons be like?

Lessons will include the following:
• Study of modern prose, drama and poetry
• Study of Shakespearian texts
• Study of Historical texts
• Opportunity for theatre visits and workshops

 

Where can it lead?


English Literature can be studied in Further and Higher Education and provides entry into careers such as law, journalism, theatre, the media and teaching. ‘AS’ and ‘A2’ Level courses in English Language and English Literature are both available in Years 12 and 13.
