The practical aspects of the Art and Design course are primarily concerned with both visual and tactile modes of expressions. GCSE Art and Design, is a unique vehicle for communication and self-expression through a variety of art and design activities to develop creative, imaginative, conceptual and practical skills.
Syllabus:
In years 10 and 11, you will complete a minimum of two themed projects which form your portfolio of work (formerly known as coursework). These projects are designed to develop a range of creative skills and will include activities such as drawing, painting, imaginative work, printmaking, 3D techniques, experimentation with media and techniques, studying the work of artists, designers and craftspeople.
Assessment:
You will keep photographic records of 3D work and 2D work will be kept in a personal folder. A lot of your work will take place in sketchbooks which are extremely important as they will contain all your planning, ideas, experimentation and developments which are a major part of your assessment. All the work produced for the course is assessed according to the Assessment Objectives and this goes towards your final grade. In the spring term of year 11, you will receive the externally set task from the exam board with up to 10 themes to choose from. You choose one and develop your project. At the end of the preparation time you will produce a final piece in 10 hours of supervised time, in the art rooms.
Where can it lead?
You could study AS Art (Fine Art) in year 12, and then move onto the A2 course in year 13 to achieve a full A Level. A good grade at GCSE is desirable for entry onto the AS/A level course. The AS course consists of a coursework portfolio (project) and an externally set assignment. At A2, you will build on the
knowledge, understanding and skills gained in AS with a greater depth of study producing an additional project and as with AS, an externally set assignment.
