Learning Support
The aim of the school is to recognise the needs of each student and to meet the needs of all students. To achieve these aims the school follows the 'Code of Practice on the identfication and Assessment of Special Needs' (DfE 2001) using the staged model of assessment.
There is close liaison with our middle schools to ensure that we are aware of potential difficulties. Other students needs are identified during their time in Ashington High School. Students are supported in various ways for the majority this takes place within the classroom, but there are occasions when withdrawal for short periods may be appropriate.
All teachers are made aware if they have students in their teaching group who have difficulties and we have close liaison with outside services who offer help and advice. Parents are encouraged to become involved in their child's progress and are welcome to arrange to discuss any concerns with the Director of our Inclusion Faculty at any time.
If students face particular learning difficulties, our Learning Support Department becomes involved, usually in classroom support on an individual basis, working alongside the subject teacher. In addition, we have a learning support room for special help and a Personalised Learning Centre where students may be withdrawn from lessons for short term individual help.
The school complies with the requirements of the National Curriculum at both Key Stage 3 and 4. Cross curricular elements are covered in guidance periods. If parents believe that their son/daughter should be exempt from any part of the National Curriculum, or feel that the school is not giving students access to some parts of the National Curriculum , they have a statutory right to appeal, details of which can be obtained from the school. Parents can withdraw their child from part, or all of the religious education provided.
We aim to provide a curriculum which is broad and balanced. At the same time we aim to cater for students with special needs and special talents and, from Year 10 onwards, to allow an element of choice in subjects studied.
A copy of the full Special Needs Policy is available on request from the school.
